Sentinum Cloud Service Replacement for Semtech LoRa Cloud LR1110 Ready

LuneX – the independent alternative to the LoRa Cloud.

LuneX is the energy-efficient cloud positioning service for LoRaWAN® devices based on the Semtech LR1110 series—and thus the native alternative to Semtech LoRa Cloud. It decodes GNSS and Wi-Fi scan data and uses it to calculate precise geographic coordinates, entirely in the cloud. The result: reliable location data with minimal energy consumption – without relying on discontinued services.

What is LuneX

Geolocation – entirely in the cloud

End devices collect raw scans, while LuneX handles the computationally intensive position calculation. This keeps the devices ultra-energy-efficient—and you retain full control over your data.

GNSS Scan Decoding

Raw satellite data (NAV) from LR1110 devices is decoded in the cloud and converted into coordinates using precise GNSS databases.

WiFi Positioning

Detected WiFi access points (MAC/SSID) are matched against WiFi databases—ideal for urban or indoor environments.

Accuracy Metrics

Latitude, longitude, and accuracy information are provided directly—including source (GNSS/WiFi) and confidence values.

How LuneX works

Four steps from scan to location

An efficient, cloud-centric architecture—from the end device to your IoT platform.

Scan

The device captures GNSS satellite data (NAV) or WiFi access points (MAC/SSID) – without local position calculation.

Uplink

The compact raw payload is transmitted via LoRaWAN® to any LNS—no proprietary stack required.

Decode in the Cloud

LuneX decodes scans, compares them against GNSS and WiFi databases, and calculates the position.

Delivery

Lat / Lon including accuracy via REST API, MQTT, or direct integration into your IoT platform.

Why scan-based

Maximum battery life thanks to scanning

Instead of calculating a complete GNSS position solution within the device, the LR1110 captures only raw scans. These are compact, recorded quickly, and ideal for low-power wireless networks.

  • Lower overall energy consumption: no traditional GNSS fix in the device.
  • Reduced peak currents: smooth current profile instead of short-term load spikes.
  • Ideal for LoRaWAN®: compact payloads are perfectly suited to low-power transmission cycles.
  • Longer service life: battery life spanning several years is realistic.

Open platform

Also for third-party providers and any LNS

LuneX is intentionally vendor-neutral. Via the open API, payloads from customer-specific network servers can be transferred directly to LuneX—without any vendor lock-in.

  • Compatible: all LoRa Edge devices based on the LR1110 series.
  • LNS-agnostic: ChirpStack, TTN, Actility, Loriot, Helium, and others.
  • No vendor lock-in: Data remains in your control; switching is possible at any time.
  • Flexible integration: REST API, MQTT topics, or webhook push.

Why LuneX was created

From real projects for real needs

When developing new IoT devices for our customers, it became clear early on: energy-efficient geolocation is a central component of modern LoRaWAN® applications. Our devices—particularly those based on the Semtech LR1110—were designed from the outset to efficiently capture GNSS and Wi-Fi scans and evaluate them in the cloud.

The obvious solution at first was to use existing cloud services such as Semtech LoRa Cloud. But during development, limitations quickly became apparent: announced discontinuations of individual features as well as a lack of native integrations with existing LoRaWAN Network Servers (LNS).

For many applications, this meant an uncertain future for existing deployments, additional integration effort, and less control over data and infrastructure. This does not meet our customers’ requirements.

LuneX emerged from this situation—an open, stable, and fully integrable cloud solution. Today, LuneX is exactly that: a reliable geolocation engine for LoRa Edge devices—developed from real-world projects.

Integration

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LuneX?

LuneX is a cloud positioning service from Sentinum. It decodes GNSS and Wi-Fi scan data from LoRaWAN® devices based on the Semtech LR1110 series and uses this data to calculate precise geographic coordinates—entirely in the cloud.

What hardware is supported?

All LoRa Edge devices based on the Semtech LR1110 series. This includes the Sentinum Juno Tracking family as well as compatible third-party hardware.

How does scan-based positioning differ from traditional GNSS?

In the scan method, the device captures only raw data (satellite data or Wi-Fi access points) instead of calculating a complete position solution itself. This significantly saves energy, reduces peak currents, and is ideally suited to LoRaWAN® transmission cycles.

Which network servers are compatible?

LuneX is LNS-agnostic. Payloads can be transferred to LuneX via API from any LoRaWAN Network Server (e.g., ChirpStack, The Things Stack, Actility ThingPark, Loriot, Helium).

How are results delivered?

Via REST API, MQTT, or through direct integration into existing IoT platforms such as the Sentinum Datahub. Latitude, longitude, and accuracy metrics are delivered.

Why not just use Semtech LoRa Cloud?

Announced deprecations of individual features and a lack of native LNS integrations have created uncertainty for existing deployments. LuneX was created to offer an open, stable, and fully integrable alternative—without vendor lock-in.

Does WiFi positioning also work indoors?

Yes. Especially in urban or indoor environments where GNSS reaches its limits, WiFi SSID scanning provides a reliable position. The combination of GNSS and WiFi ensures robust, nearly comprehensive positioning.
